This article about the Office XP calendar control not being backward compatible seems to be associated with my problem.

This is not just true of the calendar control. It is true of all Microsoft activeX controls.

Office10 is 10.0.0.2601

Make sure that this version of the controls is registered by running regsvr32 and gining it the fully qualified path name to this version of the ocx.
