Many printers can print in text-mode and in graphics-mode.

Codes like ESC "M" (chr(27) + "M") work in text-mode.

If you use standard reports in the usual way, you are printing in graphics mode, where you can't use printer codes like font-size.

Text-mode printing is much faster, but it has less options for presentation. If you want to try it, see my article on text-manipulation (Universal Thread Magazine, August 2003).
