When I used it to automate faxing with WinFax, I noticed that the user had to manually start WinFax, rather than starting with a command like OLE (also, I think OLE can start the app in the background, rather than as a minimized app, but I'm not sure about that). I would imagine that OLE will support more functionality than OLE. Also, DDE is all done with 'function' calls, while OLE is more like object programming; you call methods and set properties of an application object. I generally prefer to use niether of these options, but in a pinch, they work OK (but sometimes slow).
