I don't know if it's better, but surely more stable and supported is Windows Full-text Index technology. You can use it with SQL Server and other technologies as well. There was an interesting introduction to that in an old issue of Universal Thread Magazine. You can search for it at the Magazine index. The author is Oscar Zarate.
