So, at the end of the day, here are my settings:

1) The "Use Local Data" checkbox is checked on the User Preferences form.
2) The Data Environment level uses the default application level (Use Local Data).
3) The Data Access Object level uses remote data.

When I changed the Data Environment level to "Remote," the system stopped working on my machine, because I couldn't find the remote views. So I changed it back to 0 - Use Default Value, and it worked on my machine again.

The consequence of these three settings is that the system works on my machine, where I've been developing it, but doesn't work on the test machines (it's not finding the remote views).
