I'll answer your second question first. If you are dealing with a free table, then just the table and related FPT and CDX files open. If the table is in the DBC then the DBC opens as well because a lot of table info can be contained in the DBC (triggers, RI, default value, etc)
In regards to C/S, it depends. C/S, generally speaking is slower than native VFP access. Also, to really do this you would have to setup Client/Server(s) with a server on each LAN and replicating the data between LAN servers. HTH
