Do you specify character encoding in the original xml declaration? E.g.,
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>
If the generated document contains characters like ö (viewed as such in notepad, for instance) it should have a declaration like that at its beginning.

If this sounds like nonsense, could you provide a sample doc to make it clearer?
