If you tab into one of the fields on that page and hit F1 it gives you help on entering the control codes you need to make the printer do 17cpi. Note that this will only work for printers that support that specific code sequence; it's not a "generic" solution (pardon the pun).
What I don't see is how you instruct the printer to use that code sequence for a specific print job.
Have you tried any of the other ideas I gave before?
