Okay, here's a response, but not very good. About all I can say is that I've had several problems like yours in the past doing grid classes, a few of which are now pretty well-known, like the disappearing or non-functional code business.

That might help you a little, actually. The rest probably won't, since it's just specific to my workplace:

I still use grid classes, of course, but I end up adding much of the grid internal code, column/header properties & adjustments, and so on, in the form designer.

I'm usually stuck doing this anyway, since now with multi-line headers, I have to enter in what the user-requirements tell me for the *verylongname* captions, which are often entirely different from a field name (plus they want them formatted on different lines "just so", etc.)
