on my VFP8WP1 ( workaround pack 1 )

i use this ( your swap command idea )

OPEN DATABASE myDBC
CREATE TABLE FREE myTable (a L)
REMOVE TABLE myTable && now VFP can to sniff the DBF and he is happy
