VB.NET will work nicely with Visual FoxPro as a database. VFP is quite powerful, and light on its feet to boot. If you're going to be distributing your app, VFP is easier on that front as well.
One thing's for sure—Oracle's out. For your POS app, that'd be like shooting a squirrel with a shotgun <g>
You might want to consider asking this same question in one of the VFP sections. You're sure to get a lot of good discussion :)
