I finally did recall. Actually what you recommended is what I was already doing and it was failing. Even though I opened the database exclusively, it was telling me that I needed exclusive use before making changes. I know it doesnt make sense.

To correct this I had to "clean up" the database. But this was not available on my menu.

First I had to

USE mydatabase.dbc exclusive

just like a table
then pack it,
then clean up
then I can open mydatabase exclusive and access the RI
