"Dubious" is in the eye of the beholder. What may be sharp practice to one, may feed another's family. The legal system is how we agree on what is unacceptable practice - e.g. in Japan, where the "one-ring" practice you outlined is under legal review.

In any case, this is off-topic - or are you alleging that outsourcing IT jobs overseas is dubious/sharp practice (as opposed to being merely "dumb")?

This is truly, truly ironic. The surest way for you to be able to impose your morals on Sprint Corporation would be to gain control of it. By selling any shares you have, you don't even get the right to stand up at the mike at the AGM. Modern shareholder activism seeks to influence large mutual funds, pension/retirement systems etc. which have real clout to try to effect the changes you want. Really, you might want to rethink this strategy.

I don't disagree that translation must be an issue with overseas outsourcing. For reference, here are the first two question I asked in this thread:

"Do you really think offshore outsourcing has stood still over the last 6 or 7 years? Do you have hard evidence that Sprint's actions will lead to lower quality, and lead to poorer service and higher costs for you, the consumer?"

The following thought occurred to me:

- Suppose the offshore outsourcing team is organized around the idea of "extreme programming" (basically, paired programmers working closely together). What if one of those was strong on programming but weak on English, and the other with lesser programming skills but excellent command of both English and the local language? Or, there was a pair of strong programmers weak in English, with one strong English speaker? I see no reason why such a combination may not be as effective as a single native English-speaking programmer, and the cost may be less. Again, this is just an example - this is what I meant when I pointed out that outsourcing simply can't have stood still over the last few years.

With regards to the second question, to me your original post made it look like you're saying that you know Sprint's business better than they do. That you have some sort of inside information or experience that they don't have. I don't think you do. If you could say that your experience was within the last year, and was with a company that Sprint is evaluating for outsourcing, I'd be much more impressed by your opinion. Six or 7 years is an eternity in this business.

I think "cost savings" are related to "progress" - for that I favour Buckminster Fuller's definition, "doing more with less". I believe that progress, and cost savings, are possible. For example, MIPS/$ in Intel i386-family CPUs has increased a lot since 1985, by practically any measure of cost you choose. I think progress/cost savings "may" exist, and it's the responsibility of business to seek them out.

That is your opinion. Answers to my first 2 questions, as outlined above, would be a start.

Businesses change their strategies every day. This is hardly the first time manufacturing or services have been outsourced overseas. May I ask, why are you so interested in Sprint in particular? Do you know someone who is likely to be affected?
