Got it working. Not sure exactly which step solved it, but there was some problem with the Novell login and I started from scratch with a new userid, etc.

FWIW -- Same login name under two contexts and SQL's login attempt appeared to be defaulting to the wrong one. Was attempting to use a direct server login instead of NDS, but it was logging in under NDS anyway. Possible because it was "remembering" the context of the previous login.

Thanks for the help. Even if there was no quick answer, that let me at least know there was no quick answer.
