You can subscribe to the security updates newsletter, as well as a bunch of others at
https://register.microsoft.com/regsys/pic.asp?sec=0. I got a whole lot of the blaster warning emails, I assume because I'm subscribed to quite a few newsletters. The "Microsoft Security Notification Service" newsletter is the one that warns you "a little sooner" as you suggested.
Of course we heard about the Ms02-026 problem weeks ago but there wasn't an exploit until recently. Now that so many computers are ridden with the worm, Microsoft is doing their part to get the word out as to how to combat the problem.
