I have no experience with wireless networks, but I hope some of the following ideas help.
Bad connection; no idea how that "translates" to wireless. Lots of things can go awry at the physical level: loose cables, devices are powered-off, or not plugged in correctly, etc.
Might the wireless network be subject to interference?
One of the network cards is burned; try ping 127.0.0.1 for a "local loopback". (This is an IP address reserved for this purpose).
TCP/IP protocol is not installed. (You can use other protocols; I recommend you use TCP/IP.)
Problem with IP address. I suggest you give the machines addresses like 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 (10.x.x.x is a range reserved for local networks; other ranges exist as well), and use a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.
File sharing is not enabled, or no folder is shared. In my experience (with Windows 95 and 98), if not a single folder is shared, the computer in its entirety isn't visible, either.
Oh, well, there are quite a few things more that can go wrong. Check the above list for a start.
