I too have had this problem in VFP6 and have found two things help
1. Turn off Write Cacheing in WinXP - My Computer - C: Drive - Properties - Hardware Tab - Choose Drive again - Properties - Policies Tab - Turn off Write Cacheing
2. Delete all .cdx files and rebuild the indices.
