Sorry, cannot answer in time because of vacation. I would not consider the situation so pessimistic:
- there were no such trade deficit in history, so nobody knows the proper way to go;
- there were hard times in the human history, not just in USA, and not just because of economy or presidency, but people survived acting, learning and overcoming mistakes.
