There is service pack for Office 97 it fixes many bugs including some in Word and create some brand new ones for your personal pleasure. I have to be honest i never encounter the bug that you defined but i had so many strange things happening with my installation of Office that for me that service pack was a gift from the gods (Bill Gates for the intimate !!!!)Word of advice before installing that service pack (it's huge) take a good backup and have your Office 97 CD ready for the rescue. We are never too careful.
