Editbox garbled or invisible?

I have editboxes on most of my forms in an application to allow user notes on the work they are doing. I recently changed the settings on the editbox class I use to be ENABLED and READONLY to allow the users to scroll through a box without going into edit mode. Now the code flips the box to !READONLY when editing and back to READONLY after the save or undo. This performs exactly as the users' want except for one strange problem.

After clicking to save the record (and when the code turns the box back to READONLY), the color and display of the box changes. Sometimes the box appears as a solid gray box with no text. If you click on the box, the text appears. At other times, the box fore and back colors are in good contrast but the letters are not all legible. Instead of "The quick brown foxpro" you'll see "T_|| ___|| pro" (replace the underscores with solid blocks and you have the full picture!).

Does anyone know why this occurs and what I can do to fix it?

Thanks,
Vicki Combs
