Hi Barry,
The file/record locking between Clipper and VFP isn't compatible (at least with Summer'87). Are you trying to change the data or just process it. Also, do you get the same error with APPEND FROM?

>thanks for the idea. i tried this one because along with the descend() there were others including an if() that was really an immiediate if. i created the functions to replace the others but the descend() one didn't seem to fool it!
