I wish your daughter well! It is a struggle to be sure. My stepdaughter is on her 2nd year at UNC Wilmington, NC on a full scholarship and even with tuition fully funded, the fees, books and supplies (not to mention a REQUIRED laptop and internet access), lodging, etc are enough to break a middle income family! Her sister goes to college next year but will probably not be so lucky in winning a scholarship so it will be even more of a struggle. I keep telling my daughter (12) that she needs to study, study, study so she can go to college and buy me a condo on the beach when I retire. But at this rate, I'll never be able to retire! :o)

>I don't think she considered Swarthmore College. At least I don't remember hearing her talking about it.
>
>But our problem is "need-based". From what others (specifically my brother who claims to know EVERYTHING <g>) who went through these steps tell me that we would never be qualified for a financial aid. My wife and I both work and make good money (not to say that we can safe much with all the bills and expenses). But when they look at us, they just see what we make, not what we have left. The only thing we hope for is perhaps financial grants to our daughter to attract her to the school (since she has good grades, scores, talented musician, and just a great gal <g>)
>
>>Has she ruled out Swarthmore? While annual tuition is typically around 37,000, more than half of the students qualify for need-based financial aid of 25,000 a year which really brings the costs down. There is no 'ceiling' on the aid there.

>>>Hi Denis,
>>>I don't think she chose Montreal, yet. Some friends of ours suggested that we look into McGill, mainly because it is a very good school at a very reasonable price. Some would say cheap compared to equal USA schools.
>>>
>>>My daughter's personal preference is a smaller liberal arts school, like Vassar or Barnard. But because she understands that these schools will bury us in debt, she is willing to consider McGill and maybe another school where the price tag will be more reasonable. The advantage for us is that she is a very good high school student, with high GPA and SAT scores. Therefore, chances are she might be accepted to McGill. Otherwise, it would not even be an option.

>>>>>Thank you for the offer to fix me up with your friend. I might take you up on the offer if my daughter is accepted to McGill and some other schools where she will apply. Then we will need all the input we can get to make a better decision on where to go.

>>>>>>Hi Dmitry,
>>>>>>
>>>>>>I would agree with Sergey. I loved Montreal when we visited it few years ago. We dined in the French buffet and it was cheap comparing to Boston prices... Our only mistake was on the second evening when we went to Polish restaurant. It was late and we were hungry...
>>>>>>
>>>>>>Other than that, I have very nice memories...
>>>>>>
>>>>>>But my favorite place, which I visited so far, (and I didn't travel a lot yet) is Venice...
>>>>>>
>>>>>>My friend's son is studying in McGill. If you want, I can connect you with her...

>>>>>>>Hi Sergey,
>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>I just came back from Montreal (12 hours driving in two days )
>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>Sunday night in Montreal was uneventful. We just browsed the store windows in downtown (close to the hotel where we were staying and close to McGill). Then had dinner in nice (but very overpriced) French restaurant.
>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>Today we went on a tour of McGill. Seems like a nice school. Since it is an old school (by north American standards) some buildings remind me of my school (old buildings with stone-faced facades). My daughter is concerned by the fact that the school is very big (in number students) and that she would be lost there among thousand of others. But since she has not been accepted there, the worry is way too premature.
>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>This is my second trip to Montreal (the first one being some 20 years ago) and I still know very little about the city. I am sure if my daughter goes there, I will have to learn it more. Maybe even learn French <g>.
>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>Have you ever been there?

>>>>>>>>>I will be in Montreal Sunday night and was wondering if anybody can recommend a nice/interesting place to visit. No adult entertainment, please <g>, since I will be there with my 17 yo daughter. She wants to take a tour of McGill Univ on Monday.
