Since it has to be opened in order to gain any access at all, I *guess* they figured it may as well be open for VFP's regular use. I do not have any inside knowledge, all I know is that a SELECT does not move your VFP record pointer. So however a SELECT references the table, it can't be doing it through the same mechanisms your VFP code would use.
