You're right, Tom, it IS strange, especially that basically only the two instances (yours and Marcus') persist (that we're hearing of) after doing the 'standard' actions.
Since both of you have tried other machines as servers I guess we can also rule out bad spot(s) on a HD or a bad NIC. But that does bring up one other (remote) possiblilty... apparently newer NICs have a 'sleep mode' or some kind of auto power-off feature that is detectable/turn-offable in it's Properties. Might be worth at least a check on that. Who knows!?
