I generally use an input mask like:
1234-###-###

Where 1234 is fixed (Project Number) and the user enters values for each #.
However this will not work if the fixed part contains the numeral 9 or the letter A as these mean numeric or alpha respectively. The following are examples I would like to use:
1298-###-###
1A98-###-###
Any suggestions for a work around
