Thanks for your input. It's at least nice to know that several people agree this is a shortcoming in vartype().

Interesting code sample.

(I knew one workaround was using TYPE()="O" AND NOT ISNULL(). I thought checking PEMSTATUS(5), then using VARTYPE() should be sufficient. I guess I'm venting my disappointment that it's not.)
