Gary,

As I mentioned, the purpose of BINTOC() and CTOBIN(), were intended for use with keys. Given the the way strings are evaluated (from left to right), the ordering of the results in this fashion makes sense, and can be done somewhat faster in this fashion (not as many comparisons required).
