John, as a post script to my previous reply - you need to weigh up how often historical transactions are going to be modified vs. how often you need to report the weighted cost. I would imagine that historical transactions are not modified that often (unless you are talking about Enron) and that therefore its better to maintain the running totals with the transaction file dynamically.
