I searched for some way to indicate that in the XSD and only came up with "nillable" which I'm not sure means the same thing, and required a god-awful bunch of "stuff" in the "null" element to indicate that the element should indeed not contain any content.

At this point though, by just dropping (null) elements, the file is failing the XML Validation, but is loading just fine.
