I have more experience with printing in text mode (I don't know whether this is relevant). Anyway, I usually used:
set printer to NAME ...
I find the help file a little confusing, but it does seem that you should use the NAME clause for a named printer. Without the NAME clause, SET PRINTER is used - as I understand it - for a specific port (e.g., LPT1).
