OpenOffice.org can be automated, but it's not as straightforward as with Office. It uses a different language, not VBA, and, of course, has a different object model.

One of the big difficulties is that the OOo macro recorder doesn't record the automation language. It's more of a sophisticated keystroke recorder.

In addition, the object model and automation language aren't yet very well documented.

For a first look at the issues involved, check out Ted Roche's article in the May '03 FoxTalk. My book has some additional pointers for this stuff. Here's the relevant paragraph:

The definitive guide to writing macros in OpenOffice.org is Andrew Pitonyak’s macro
document, available at www.pitonyak.org/AndrewMacro.sxw. You can find additional
macro information at www.darwinwars.com/lunatic/bugs/oo_macros.html. The home site
for macros and automation is api.openoffice.org. The How To section at
documentation.openoffice.org includes a good introductory document on using macros.
