Bret;
I have just gone through “Infrastructure Hell”, and can emphasize with you. It is a bit like the military. There is no choice only dictate. You will have a new computer! Well, I received my new HP Xeon dual processor (lots of bells and whistles) and it was left up to me to save files, etc. After I got everything set up and running as it should upon receiving the new box, guess what?
My new computer went totally flaky after one day on the job, and would not turn off even if you pressed the power switch. So I pulled the power plug. After calling our Hardware Support Group, whey took away the machine. It required a new Power Supply, motherboard and one CPU. Then I got to start all over again!
Another “fun issue” is what operating system will be on the new box? Will it still be Windows 2000 or will it be Windows XP? Going to XP will give you all sorts of potentially interesting things to consider.
Have you ever considered how many groups are adversaries to software developers? Clients, Management, Infrastructure, SQA, DBA’s, Network personnel, and Microsoft come to mind. Deliver on time (who needs specifications) and be sure it works!
Good luck on the new machine. :)
Tom
