What you want to do is akin to hacking, and is what all the security measures that are made are designed to stop. It will probably be tough to just get something that will allow you to probe another computer without going to each computer and opening it up for access.
I recall a program (sorry can't remember the name) that would write a text file of the hardware and other setup to a text file. Maybe you could get your users to run it to give you what you need?
