A nice simple solution would be to use a third party control. The protocol can get rather lengthy and complicated, especially with some of the more advanced functionality.

My company makes one called SMTP Wizard and it is in use by many clients around the world in FoxPro and many other languages. Its highly reliable and works with multiple authentication mechanisms and easy to use functionality.

I would appreciate if you at least considered and compared it to the alternatives.
