In the forms I design (based on Visual Extend), the user starts in a grid. It should be quite clear that the user can search in the grid for an existing record, to view or edit it, or to delete it. Also, with the buttons on the toolbar, the user can create a new record.
I don't see a problem with this approach.
OTOH, if the data is bound to a field, it will display the contents of that field. You could create a blank record from the very beginning, but that may not be appropriate under all circumstances.
You could also unbind the record and bind it later - but I think this sort of workarounds ain't worth the trouble.
