After doing a bit more rummaging around, my best guess is that t = 'temporary' - a variable that is used for a short period in a given context and then disappears. I realise that can also apply to a local variable, but since we have l for local...

According to Charles Simonyi who invented Hungarian Notation, in the lower level languages like C++, Xt is a temporary variable, and since the convention in VFP is 1 character for type, then 't' for temporary makes sense.
