In general, you're correct.
However, I made my own grid class that contains a lot of code that helps to preserve original grid layout even when you re-assign another cursotr to it. I used RecorSource_Assign method, where I remember columns layout before assigning empty string, then restore columns layout after assigning new record source to the RecordSource property of grid.
