Usually you work in autocommit mode, when any sql command is fixed automatica;y
When you make loop in your cursor at client and send updates to server it may cause to it big job for all steps.
If you go on the way I have described, server will accumulate more big portions of the data and fix it more rare , it is faster and easy for server
