Hey Tom,

I guess what really bothers me is that the church is using a very weak hypothisis on the effectiveness of condoms to lower the risk of getting aids to support their position on birth control. The means does not justify the ends here. Their view is that using condoms kills unborn people, but it seems obvious to me that not using condoms kills people as well.

>In reality condoms are not 100% safe – for many reasons. They tend to give users and potential users a false sense of security. Latex may be the safest of the types manufactured. This is a case where outsourcing manufacturing may not be a good idea. I would be more concerned with the “Holey Condom” than the “Holy City”.

>Like the generation I grew up with, they had an attitude that drugs and sex were pleasures to be enjoyed and were of no consequence to society. People would state, “I can do whatever I want to my body. It hurts no one else”! Such rationalization is childish and lacks understanding of how dependant we are upon each other and society.
>
>If society is out of control then many will be hurt. If you are on drugs as many were and are, then life is good. So you die at 25 – who cares? You had fun and that is what life is all about. Join Timothy Leary in his urn and roll on the grass. Join Freddie Mercury and experience the ecstasy that life has to offer. Bring your life partners with you.

>You pay a price for your actions and society will be effected by whatever you do for better or worse. The terms casual sex and recreation drugs are terms that show the importance of these topics to many.
>
>We could get into the moral argument on this topic. Can you have your cake and eat it too? It you want to behave like an animal in rut then you must be willing to pay the consequences. Wearing galoshes or hip boots will not prevent you from getting wet in a rain storm all of the time. There will always be the possibility of a flash flood you had not planned on. Stay out of the rain and it will increase your chances of keeping dry!

>For many the Church and its teaching is outmoded. That is a matter of individual choice. However, I point out that the Catholic Church is the worlds largest religious group. Other religions teach similar doctrines.
>
>They say that living the life of a Catholic is more difficult than dying. You either live as the Church dictates or you do as you please. You only kid yourself if you think you can have everything your way. After all, who needs God or the Church to live your life for you? You know what is best for you and the world. That is why you are where you are today.

>>This is a show that will air sometime this weekend - saw it discussed briefly last night on the world news. The gist of it is regarding how the Catholic church is stating offiicially that condoms - latex or otherwise - do not help stop the spread of aids. Simply put, regardless of their stand on the birth control issue, this is deplorable. It would be fine to say to do not use them because the church does not believe in birth control, but to say that they are not an effective way to reduce the spread of aids is not. Makes me feel that the church has not come anywhere since the 1400's.
>>
>>Update: My opinion that by doing this they are effectively killing people.
