I had no problem in VFP 7 with Gif images on command buttons. Besides, there is no transparent option in command buttons in VFP 7 to play with (don't know about VFP 8).

Have you checked the number of colors in the windows display mode and in the image?
Have you checked that the Gif is effectively transparent? Some programs are a little tricky when saving transparent gifs.
