but mixing Linux with VFP is not something that will motivate me to attend a conference.

One has to seriously question the wisdom (or lack thereof) of these decisions. My take is this: Whil wants to move a good chunk of VFP developers over to Linux. The hook? First - the lure of an untapped market with a lack of RAD Tools and Two - Fox will work under Wine.

The truth is this:

First - those serious about Linux are working in Java and are checking out the Jarkarta DB Project and are looking at tools like Torque and Turbine. These tools implement the MVC scenario that Codebook and DataClas embraced. Nobody in their right mind is going to predicate new development on 1 platform that requires an emulator to simulate the environment of another platform. Also, from a business and economic standpoint - needing a full license for each Linux box takes Fox out of the market.

Second - it is highly debateable as to how much Fox really works under Wine. I know Paul McNett is doing a lot of tinkering to get Fox to work - and FWIW - I respect what he is doing. Why? Because he is exerting his own sweat and effort into the endeavor. At best - there are others who are "hangers on" to his work. From a business standpoing - I see a "free rider" problem. You can guess who the free rider is. Unless you can take your Fox app and have it run unchanged on Linux - this too makes it a non-starter.

As far as the book market is concerned - I heard that Tamar's openoffice.org book was at B&N. At 60 bucks - the approx 300 page books is WAY over-priced when you compare it to the Que book which is 900 pages and appears to be a better book to boot.

If anything, there is a humor value to it all....
