Hello Ian
I have been using SYBASE ANYWHERE here in Paris. The experience has been successful including speed ... but i worked on limited quantities of information. Could you be more specific on your difficulties (quantities of information, nature of the operations that are slow).
You mention that ODBC could be the problem. If your difficult relate to data retrieval, try your SELECT string both from Anywhere ISQL and thru SQLEXEC.
You might find situation where Anywhere is the problem ... and some where OBBC is.
I have never been stuck with speed issues until recently as i discovered that the optimizer of the new 5.5 version is clearly not as good as his version 4. and version 5.O one when running highly complex SELECT strings! just waiting for version 6.
Good luck
