When using native VFP data, I have been very successful using the record and field validation rules available in the database. I have found that trying to validate data in the GUI can be unnecessarily difficult, particularly in complex UIs where there are numerous navigation points where the record pointer moves either intentionally or unintentionally.

By placing the validation logic at the point where the data is updated (table and field rule stored procs in the DBC), it frees me to develop my GUI without having to anticipate how the user is going to navigate.
