I'm not sure what you mean by "broken links" on the Microsoft public newsgroups - perhaps you were trying to use the web interface. Well, in a word - don't.

Fire up Outlook Express, then Tools > Accounts > News > Add, the news server is msnews.microsoft.com. Put in your name and email (try munging it so the spam bots won't pick it up). After that it will download a list of newsgroups and you can put Word or Office in the filter to find the ones you want.
