Andy,

I looks like MS recently licensed one of the few world leaders
in the field of OCR. They are litteraly only a hand of companies
that have a competitive OCR engine. Hence a closed market for
SDK tools and heavy prices. Like SQL engines a couple of years ago.
A few names
-ABBYY, russian clear world tech leader
- expervision,
- leadtools,
- accusoft
Leadtools has a full "graphic handling" solution from scanning
to ocr. They are costly but their offer should cover your need.
I read the name of the company that licensed their tech to MS
but just can not remember now.
I expect this company licensed their engine for integration not
their core technology. So i would not expect an effective
automation model within the Office 2003 stuff.
It looks like MS has no skills in this field at this time,
that may change...
OCR is now a really enabling technology. Still looking for a
a reasonable solution at this moment. I may test the abby
toolkit (ocr only, top quality) soon.
Will feedback UT when done
Kind regards
François
