Have you considered building a COM server to do this task? The com server will run on the server where the data is, so there will be no issue with the network.

There was an article in FoxTalk about this a year or so ago, and their wait times went down considerably if I remember correctly.

PS: Why not set up MSDE on a machine and give it a try. How intensive are the calculations/etc?
