Reducing CR-related footprint on workstations
All,
I have a VFP7 multi-user application that uses a number of Crystal Reports 9 reports for printing and exporting to MS Word. Thus there are about a dozen CR runtime files needed for the application taking up about 10Mb of storage. In order to make the application available to our Citrix metaframe users, I had to remove all references to the user's hard drive for temporary storage or references.
While working on this I discovered that the CR runtimes can be stored on a central location such as a public server and would work as long as the deployment registry key pointed to the shared resource. For example, the CR9Deploy.REG file now looks like:
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Crystal Decisions\9.0\Crystal Reports]
"CommonFiles"="\\\\Cs2\\vol1\\SHARED\\Public\\GSIS04\\bin"
(Note that you need two backslashes to use the UNC path)
Instead of the standard one from Crystal --
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Crystal Decisions\9.0\Crystal Reports]
"CommonFiles"="C:\\program files\\common files\\crystal decisions\\2.0\\bin"
Now there is just one source for the runtimes (easier to update) and the user's application footprint has been reduced by 10Mb.
