I showed a friend of mine an app that i had written in vfp 8 and copied it onto his machine, he is not a programmer and has never used vfp but it ran first time on his machine. he does keep up to date as regards patches etc so maybe it is implemented as one of those

>That is not correct. VFP8R.DLL is the VFP runtime dll and it is required on all operating systems. On NT based operating systems it is stored in %PROGRAMFILES%\%COMMONFILES%\VFP directory.
