I've been playing with SQL Server since a month. I have a concern about its reliability.
It's just that since a month, we have had a tons of situations where the SQL Server is not working well. In Visual FoxPro, I never had such problems.
We tested it using ASP with ADO, with SQL Enterprise Manager, with ISQL and with Visual Interdev. The problems are similar in each environment. Sometimes, the SQL Server begins to get slower until it finally hang. Sometimes, it will just stop responding. Sometimes, it will just returns a bunch of errors. Sometimes, it will work for one user and not for others.
What causes the problems are coming from different sources. Sometimes, a program in C is making the server acting like this. Sometimes, someone is installing a program and the reaction is the same. Sometimes, it just happens like this. Sometimes, it is when someone is using PC Anywhere.
When that happen, we tried to shut down the SQL service and starting it up again. This has not impact. We need to reboot the server.
Ok, it's true that in production, someone is not suppose to play on the server. However, some programs, like the C program, will continue to run.
I am not impressed so far.
We normally have to focus on the code to make sure it runs ok. Now, we have an additional layer, the SQL Server, which we also have to rely on to make the SQL stuff works.
Any feedback are appreciated.
