Thanks for your help.
As a follow up. I've dug around some more and found the roblem is that you need to do a POP3 connect first and then the SMTP sendmail. I found another problem that Rick solved and that was if you pass with the sendmail the username and password it causes another error of "Invalid base64 data" which is caused by logging in a second time. Leave the username and password blank and all works as planned.
